Ten Questions with ... Board President, Dr. Curtis Rogers
Q: What made you join the InDwellings’ board?
A: As a clinical geneticist I was drawn to the need for appropriate, safe housing for adults with intellectual disabilities.
Q: Why is the InDwellings’ mission to bring “Homes of Love” to adults with developmental disabilities so important to you?
A: Many of the individuals who need this housing are my patients, and I have seen their parents struggle with the question, “Who will take care of my child, when I no longer can?”
Q: Why should the InDwellings’ mission be important to people who will not be directly affected by our “Homes of Love”?
A:Human compassion is the simple answer, but given the incidence of intellectual disability is roughly 1 in 50, we will all be personally touched by someone who needs our help.
Q: If you could dispel one misconception about people with developmental disabilities, what would it be?
A:I think we should focus on the fact that these individuals are differently-abled, and less on the idea of “disabled.” Like all of us, someone needs to help them find their niche.
Q: Why have you served on the InDwellings’ board for so many years?
A: I want to see the dream of a safe and loving home fulfilled for individuals and their families. And I also guess I am so stubborn that I want to make sure InDwellings succeeds!
Q: What’s the best way people can help us establish “Homes of Love”?
A:There are several opportunities including board membership, serving on committees, being a friend of InDwellings by praying for us, coming to our events, helping to publicize our fundraisers, and recommending individuals with differing skills to our organization.
Q: How does being a Clinical Geneticist help you in your service to the InDwellings’ board?
A:Many of the individuals living in the homes will be seen by me or one of my colleagues in genetics. We have the unique opportunity to help families, and learn from them as theirchildren age and individual needs change. I hope my experience has made me more compassionate and understanding of the challenges that are faced by these families.
Q:What is something about you that might surprise even your closest friends?
A:I am not a very “surprising” person. I wear my emotions on my sleeve, so there are very few secrets!
Q: What’s your favorite quote?
A:“Ah, but a man’s reach should exceed his grasp, Or what’s a heaven for?” - Robert Browning. Another would be an original: “If it ain’t all wrong, then it will be alright.”
Q: What is your vision of where InDwellings could be in 10 years, with increased support from our community?
A:My dream would be to serve 40 residents in 10 houses, located throughout the entire Piedmont area. This is a huge dream and will require more board members, friends, and families being involved. We have learned that the road is long and sometimes challenging, and requires the commitment of everyone involved.
